Spurious Correlation

A correlation between two variables where the correlation is not caused by one variable causing the other (i.e., where the correlation is caused by one or more additional variables that have been ignored when calculating the correlation).

Commonly variables in surveys are correlated due to response styles which results in many correlations between survey variables to be spurious correlations.
