Principal Components Analysis is often referred to is Factor Analysis. Although the two techniques are very closely related, they are different techniques. Outside of some areas of academia, almost all applications of Factor Analysis are actually applications of Principal Components Analysis (and, many programs, such as SPSS, automatically compute Principal Components Analysis when the user requests Factor Analysis).
